There are a lot of misconceptions about nursing care homes and rehab facilities.

First off, these facilities are very, very expensive. If you choose one of a nursing home or rehab facility and it is not the right type of care, you will use up a lot of money. But, even more important than cost, the Seniors I work with here in Northeast Tarrant County are most concerned about simply getting into a good facility. If your parents, or other Senior loved one, is in an inadequate facility you will be constantly worried that they are not receiving quality care. That is not a good feeling at all.

Who are these types of facilities for? The Senior who benefits the most from this type of housing are individuals who require medical care. These facilities are most restrictive types of housing between independent living, assisted living, and nursing care. Sometimes this level of supervision and care is absolutely necessary, but it is recommended that Seniors remain in assisted living situations as long as they possible can safely.

The next question to ask is, what is the difference between a nursing home and a rehab facility? The main difference is that nursing care homes are for long-term residents while rehab facilities specialize in short-term care for individuals who need medical supervision now but are expected to recover enough to return to living more independently. They both provide medical care above and beyond what is available in an assisted living facility and are staffed by nurses and other medical professionals 24 hours a day.

The biggest benefit of a nursing care home or rehab facility is that the staff will monitor vitals and other medical needs. They will manage the care plan, observe conditions, administer tube feedings, and other daily medical tasks that other types of housing cannot provide.

The estimated cost is between $5,500 and $8,000 per month. It is a high price point, but these facilities provide a lot of care which is valuable. If you are in need of ways to lower the costs, you can go to older facilities which are usually a little bit more affordable. Facilities can provide excellent care without being brand new. While I understand that every situation will have a unique budget, but remember that you want to make sure that your family member is in the best type of facility that they can be in.
