Recently, there has been a lot of demand for affordable Senior housing.

Some of the options include Senior apartments, townhouses, and garden homes.  These types of housing are similar to age restricted communities but have fewer amenities. Unlike independent living facilities—with shuffleboard, other games, and a huge center—these facilities are not much more than small apartments. Some subdivisions will also include townhouses and garden homes as well.

This type of housing has many benefits.  It is a great option for people who are downsizing but still want privacy, because you will still get your own home. Townhouses, for example, are connected to each other, but you still get your own place. You are not sharing a room or even sharing a hallway, so privacy is still protected. Some units will be equipped with ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) compliant or gated entrances, which are crucial to maintaining both safety and privacy. And perhaps the biggest benefit is that these communities are Seniors only. However, unlike some other housing options, this type of housing does not offer much in the way of amenities.  There are not many planned activities, so if that is important to you an independent living facility may be a better option.

Age restricted Senior apartments tend to be a more affordable type of housing, but the cost does vary. In Northeast Tarrant County, the prices range from about $1,000 up to $3,000, depending on how fancy the community is.  Now, there are some ways that you can lower the costs. One way is to generate referrals, perhaps from friends and other community members who are looking for similar housing. There are some local referral agencies that can help. If you need help, or you want to get a referral, you can reach out to our office and we will connect you to an agency that we know and trust.

Another financial factor to consider is that, although the cost of this type of housing can be higher than just a basic mortgage, the numbers are usually similar when you factor in home maintenance and house expenses. This is especially true if you may need to make major safety updates to your home in the future that would require you to bring in professional contractors, such as installing ramps, extra lighting, or lift chairs.

Senior apartments, townhouses, and garden homes have some great benefits for people in the right situation. I encourage you to explore these as an option as you plan your Senior housing journey.
